Job Summary | Resumen

We are seeking Field Documentation Technicians who can support the development of an important documentation and educational project of the Centro de Conservación y Restauración de Puerto Rico (CENCOR) in our Division of Historic Buildings and Sites. The project is part of our larger initiative to promote awareness of the preservation of our built heritage through a survey of historic buildings in 15 municipalities around the Islands.

Centro de Conservación y Restauración de Puerto Rico (CENCOR) is a private, nonprofit institution dedicated to promoting, protecting, and preserving Puerto Rico's cultural heritage, broadly interpreted to include heritage objects, collections, and architecture, and sites. CENCOR’s initiatives, programs, and projects provide educational and professional development opportunities to public and private cultural institutions, professionals, and the general public. Through conservation and preservation projects, study and research, education and training, and dissemination of cultural heritage, the Center help our communities to know and explore their culture, history, and heritage, to protect and preserve it. Our Staff comes from diverse disciplines, including architecture, archaeology, conservation, history, information science, engineering, operations management, and communications.

Responsibilities | Responsabilidades

As Field Documentation Technician, the individual filling this position will assist in the development of the project. Individuals with knowledge of historic preservation and/or historic architecture in Puerto Rico and experience in facilitating or conducting research, education, outreach, and/or advocacy related to architecture, cultural heritage, planning, engineering, history, and/or the visual arts are desirable, but not required.


The Field Documentation Technician will report directly to and work closely with the Project Coordinator and Assistant Field Coordinator.


The position requires excellent communication skills and attention to detail. Major job responsibilities include:


  • Assist the team in collecting data from historic properties on-site, including relevant information and photographic surveys;


  • assist in collecting, reviewing, analyzing, and reporting results of surveys;


  • participate in orientations, weekly staff meetings, and other periodic meetings as requested;


  • other tasks related to the project, as required by the Project Coordinator and Assistant Field Coordinator. 

Qualifications | Cualificaciones

This position requires a service-oriented person who is highly committed to the educational aims of the Centro de Conservación y Restauración de Puerto Rico. The successful candidate must have the following:


  • One (1) or more - High School Diploma/GED; Associate's Degree and/or Bachelor's Degree;


  • Superior written and oral communication skills, 


  • Organizational acumen and exceptional attention to detail, and must exhibit initiative, optimism, and the ability to listen well. 


  • The candidate must be collegial and able to work as part of a team. 


  • Ability to travel around the Islands.


  • Familiarity with historic buildings and sites and/or initiatives in cultural heritage institutions in Puerto Rico is desirable but not required. Specific training will be provided.

  • Ability to work in a self-directed environment using strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines. 


  • Ability to work with and through others to achieve measurable objectives.


  • Excellent people skills – knowledge of how to talk to people in their own language in order to build consensus and goodwill.


  • Knowledge and proficiency in Microsoft Office (MS Office Word, Excel, etc.) and Adobe Creative Suite software (pdfs) is preferred, but not required.


  • Basic photography knowledge and skills are a plus.
